OCADU Book Arts Fair!

It's time for the 31st annual OCADU Book Arts Fair! Saturday Dec. 5th from 10 am - 5 pm at 100 McCaul St. in The Great Hall. Great Place to get all sorts of cool handmade gifts. Hand screened posters, letterpress printed broadsides, hand bound notebooks, cards, original hand pulled prints art prints, artist's books, hand bound books and more papery bookish awesomeness!

37th Annual Wayzgoose

It's finally spring and Wayzgoose time again!! The weather forecast says it will be nice out so go for a nice drive and come visit the Grimsby 'Goose! This year it is the 37th Wayzgoose. I've been doing them for over 25 years now...WHAT?!?! How old am I?

My first Wayzgoose was when I was in 2nd year printmaking at OCA. My relief instructor, the wonderful Bill Poole, was the man behind the Grimsby 'Goose and the one who encouraged me to go. I remember cramming myself into George Walkers little Bug with Michelle, Frederica Tomas of Utility Grade and David Keyes for the drive to Grimsby. Was it really that long ago?

Got some sun!

My family went to Florida during the March break. When he heard I was heading to Florida to visit my sister Don Black put me in touch with Bridget Elmer, the studio coordinator of the Ringling College Letterpress and Book Arts Centre at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota! Bridget was kind enough to make time to meet me one morning at the centre which is the new home of Hal and Judilee Sterne's old letterpress studio. Bridget also invited me to attend the Ned Drew lecture and reception that was happening the following night and to drop in on his workshop in the RCLBAC the day after that! Ned Drew is a Graphic Designer. He is the head of the Graphic Design Program at Rutgers and Professor part-time at the Pratt Institute. He is also a lover of type and letterpress and incorporates letterpress into his personal work!

"The Letterpress and Book Arts Center was established at the Ringling College of Art and Design in May of 2011, with the acquisition of Harold and Judilee Sterne’s studio. Harold "Hal" Sterne, who passed away in 2010, began printing at the age of 14 and is a central figure in the history of letterpress printing and equipment preservation. Hal co-founded NA Graphics with Tom Bell and purchased Vandersons (previously Vandercook & Sons) just days before the company was scheduled to close its doors. As Fritz Klinke (current owner of NA Graphics) explains, if it weren't for Hal, "we would have nothing in the way of support for these presses today."
